AQA RP7: The Pigments Present in Leaves

Abstract:

Use of chromatography to investigate the pigments isolated from leaves of different plants, eg leaves from shade-tolerant and shade-intolerant plants or leaves of different colours.

Hints & Tips:

- The solvent is propanone: petroleum ether (bp 100-120C) in a ratio of 1:9. Label as flammable and harmful to the environment.

- The chromatograms will fade quickly once the experiment has finished, so mark the spot position(s) in pencil as soon as possible.

- You can use thin-layer chromatography plates as an alternative to paper. Ensure you hold the TLC plates by the edges.
