Abstract:

Preparation and drawing of cheek and onion cells, as viewed under the light microscope.

Hints & Tips:

- The inside of the cheek is delicate tissue so the cotton bud needs to be rubbed gently on the surface to pick up cells. The cotton bud should then be placed immediately into the disinfectant.

- When using onion be careful to remove the thin epidermal layer ('skin') and not the thicker fleshy part of the onion

- We suggest that the techniques involved should be first demonstrated to the students and students should be allowed time to practice the technique of preparing a slide.

- Methylene blue is a low hazard substance but will stain skin and clothing so care should be taken during use.
