Abstract:
Investigate the effect of a range of concentrations of salt or sugar solutions on the mass of plant tissue.
Alternative 1: Using salt solutions to investigate osmosis in potato tissue.
Alternative 2: Investigating osmosis in onion cells.
Hints & Tips:
- Cut potatoes into equal-sized cylinders using a cork borer or a potato chipper for multiple groups; prepare in advance to save time and reduce waste.
- Knives or solid scalpels are best for this activity and use a tile or small cutting board.
- If students are to use cork borers, they should be shown how to use them.
