Abstract:
Describe how light microscopes and staining can be used to view cells (eg human cheek cells).
Hints & Tips:
- The inside of the cheek is delicate tissue so the cotton bud needs to be rubbed gently on the surface to pick up cells. The cotton bud should then be placed immediately into the disinfectant.
- Use pictures and diagrams to aid success.
- We suggest that the techniques involved should be first demonstrated to the students and students should be allowed time to practice the technique of preparing a slide.
- Methylene blue is a low hazard substance but will stain skin and clothing so care should be taken during use.
