AQA RP6: Photosynthesis

Abstract:

Investigate the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis using an aquatic organism such as pondweed.

Alternative 1: Investigating the effect of light wavelength on photosynthesis in pondweed.

Alternative 2: Investigating the effect of carbon dioxide concentration on photosynthesis in pondweed

Hints & Tips:

- Cabomba caroliniana was recommended as a species for this experiment but this is no longer available in the UK, due to the invasive plant directive. Other alternatives are Elodea/ Egeria Densa, Egeria Nagas, or Cabomba Aquatica (Yellow Cabomba).

- Cut the stem under the level of the liquid at an angle, this is important as it stops airlock from forming.

- Use a lamp with at least 1000 lumens. LED lamps are best as they do not produce heat and therefore do not require a heat shield.
